What a year it was for Skepta. After a few setbacks, his fourth album ‘Konnichiwa’ finally found a release, and met with the best reception of his career, eventually winning the Mercury Prize. It was such a hot summer for him that within weeks, he had released a brand new single, a sort of victory lap as he revelled in the adulation that he had waited so long for. Atlanta’s iLoveMakonnen is responsible for the distinctive, playful, MIDI-like beat, and Céon takes the credit for the hook, but it is the Tottenham MC who justifiably claims that “I’m the man of the year, and it’s still June”.
(For my fellow anally retentive attention-to-detail nerds, I would have picked ‘Shutdown’, and it would’ve been higher, but I had it on my 2015 list, and WHAT ELSE ARE RULES FOR)
